Best Toronto Hair Salon: Navigate Space

I had the most wonderful day yesterday.

With Fashion Week fast approaching and an office move that put my desk in close proximity to Rita Silvan's office, I've been feeling like I need to step the chic level up a notch.

So I called the highly recommended Creative Director and Owner of Navigate Space , John Taccone, to see if he could squeeze me in.

Navigate Space is one of the most inviting salons I have ever been in. It's beautiful: warm, and acts as a sanctuary from the rest of the world. You have to access it through an ornate courtyard off the corner of the Esplanade and Berkeley street. John's clients are fiercely loyal to him and his word of mouth is excellent. I did a lot of research to see who could zsush me up-- John's reputation is flawless. I understand why now.

As soon as I sat down, John and I looked in the mirror and he asked "What do you love about your hair?" No stylist has ever asked me that before. We had a ten or fifteen minute consultation before deciding on straight across bangs and cleaning up the length. John also had the idea to dye my hair the same colour it already is to richen up the tone and create more texture, eliminating some of the baby fineness.

I can be, and have been, a stylist's worst nightmare because I am a nervous creature. I love having long hair and tend to freak when I see big strands of hair being cut off. At John's I was completely and totally at ease and trusted him implicitly.

After my hair was cut and set with dye, John surprised me with a special treat: his friend David Goveia, a professional makeup artist to the stars, gave me a full-blown makeup tutorial. David has worked with Kate Moss and Cameron Diaz, and Mary Kate and Ashley always ask for him when they are in town. He gave me some very valuable tips to share with you lovely readers.

1) Bronzer creates the effect of fat, shiny faces. If you are going to use it, use it on the contours of your face as you would use a blush.

2) Lip gloss always, never lipstick. Clear lip gloss brings out the natural lovely shade of your lips, where as lipstick can age you 10 years, according to David.

3) NARS makes the best highlighter, which every girl should own.

4) Never underestimate the power of pearly white eye shadow, which will accentuate your eyes and make them pop. David likes Lancome.

5) Always curl eyelashes! Also, David likes mascara's with a pointed brush. If you are looking for a drugstore brand eyeliner, David recommends going with Rimmel.

David was very patient as I bombarded him with questions. He showed me how to attain a day-time eye that is appropriate for the office, and then how to create a night-time eye for shows and parties. The best part? All of his advice made sense, so it shouldn't be hard to recreate. AND I'm one degree away from Kate Moss!

I didn't just get a haircut yesterday, I got a whole experience. "I do your hair so you don't have to," John laughed as he blow-dried. In three hours yesterday, I went from feeling like a plain jane to the belle of the ball-- my boyfriend and my family insist it's the best haircut I've ever gotten.

No wonder John's clients love him so much.

The "Before" Picture

The next day: the marker of a good hair cut is when you can recreate the style after the stylist is done with you. And I applied all the wonderful tips David taught me. I feel like a million bucks!

Gearing Up for LG Fashion Week

These images were snapped backstage at London Fashion Week by Carlos Industries and really helped to get me excited about Toronto's Fashion Week (even though the new location leaves a little something to be desired). In case you missed the news blast yesterday, Fashion Week has been moved from East Liberty Village to the Allstream Centre on the Exhibition grounds.

I'm starting to get some fun invites to different shows and the next month will be jam-packed with fun activities. Tomorrow I'm going to meet up with Magnolia Boutique owner Juan Carlos to go to the Philip Sparks fashion show and then drop in on the National Post/Hugo Boss bash honoring "The Worthy 30." On Saturday stay tuned for my review of uber-chic hair salon  Navigate Space.

Stay tuned lovelies, there is fun stuff ahead!

Alexander McQueen's Final Collection

No words.

Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall Collection 2010

Alexander McQueen's pre-fall collection features printed frocks, tweed jackets, graphic suits and that unique je ne sais quoi that the designer was famous for.

My words are too clumsy to adequately express the loss of this iconic figure. I'm excited and apprehensive for the unveiling of his full Fall collection. On the one hand I don't want the finality of knowing that's all there is left of his vision, on the other what better way to celebrate his life than through his collections?

Worst Dressed at the Oscars

Maggie Gyllenhaal's Dries Van Noten print dress isn't awful, it's just not appropriate for an Oscar nominee's big night. Where's the drama? Where's the risk? Super blah.

Let's be honest: Zoe Saldana is so beautiful you could put her in a paper bag and she'd probably still look chic. This lavender colour ruffled Versace gown is not doing her any favors though. I hate the bottom of it. It's like somebody melted down the muppets and turned them into a dress.

Charlize Theron, this isn't your first time at the rodeo. You know the press is merciless about Oscar night faux-pas...yet you still elected to walk the red carpet with cupcakes attached to your breasts.  The silhouette is snooze-ville, the colour is whatev's-- did you just not try this year? Are you over it?

Vera Farmiga wore this fuchsia knife pleated ruffled Marchesa nightmare to the show. First, the dress is a hideous clash with the red carpet. It's just too much. Too much dress. Too many ruffles. The colour is strangling me. Death by dress. Not okay.

Best of the Oscar Night Bunch

I thought Cameron Diaz was best dressed in this amazing Oscar de la Renta gown. Well done Team Zoe! I thought the dress was spectacular, but is it just me or is Cameron looking a little rough these days? Also, when she presented that award with Steve Carrell I was cringing. It takes a special talent to make Steve Carrell look lame and unfunny.

Demi Moore looked lovely in this Atelier Versace tiered blush gown. Such a flattering colour on Demi-- another score for Rachel Zoe's team.

I thought Elizabeth Banks killed it in this swan-like Versace gown. The colour really compliments her skin tone and makes her look like a porcelain doll.

I thought this Swarovski-encrusted Armani Privé gown was so gorge but I thought it was a little ballsy of Amanda Seyfried to wear this elaborate gown considering she wasn't nominated for a trophy. The hair completely slicked back was a little severe for my liking but otherwise it's a beautiful look.

Gabourey Sidibe looked lovely in this periwinkle Marchesa number. I think the colour is so beautiful against her skin tone and am so happy for her recent success.

This Eli Saab Haute Couture pastel coloured gown is perfect for spring time, fits impeccably and has wonderful shape and movement. I love how Rachel McAdams rep-rep-represents for the Canadian girls.
